John has brought a wealth of insight and a genuine passion for lifelong learning to his role, drawing on over 40 years’ experience in further and higher education. He has also been a steady, thoughtful and deeply committed presence, guiding us through significant moments of change and growth.
John shared this comment: “It has been a great privilege to serve the WEA as chair of the board of trustees over the past eight years. I’ve enjoyed working together with fellow trustees and staff and will continue to be an advocate and supporter of lifelong learning and this vital charity.”
We would like to take this moment to thank John and welcome Geoff Layer, currently Vice Chair of Trustees, who has been appointed as the next Chair.
Geoff will take up the role in August 2026, allowing plenty of time for a smooth and well‑supported transition.
Geoff brings extensive experience from across post‑compulsory education, including senior roles at Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Bradford. He served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton for a decade and continues to contribute to the sector through strategic development work at Coventry University. He is also Chair of Fircroft College of Residential Adult Education.
On his appointment, Geoff said: “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of chair of trustees for the WEA. Having witnessed the transformative power of lifelong learning, I am truly inspired by the meaningful work this charity delivers. It is a privilege to continue serving the WEA in this capacity, and I look forward to working alongside colleagues to drive even greater impact for adult learners across England and Scotland.”
