Congratulations to Aberdeen’s Bonnymuir Green Community Trust - who’ve picked up the WEA Green Award for their commitment to promoting sustainability in the local community.
The award ceremony took place at the Trust’s garden and was filmed by STV News, which has 3.2 million Scottish viewers a month.
Ray McCowan, our Director for Scotland, presented the award, as well as a runner-up award to community growing organisation, One Seed Forward.
Led, developed and sustained by volunteers, Bonnymuir Green Community Trust runs a community-owned green space in Aberdeen. It has a vision to create a sustainable hub with an emphasis on promoting greener, carbon-reducing lifestyles within the community.
The thriving community green space was a worthy winner based on the sheer variety of activities, which members of the local community love to engage in. This includes garden workshops teaching locals how to ‘grow your own’ vegetables and composting, clothing repair sessions, and information about beekeeping. The community building has also recently changed to become more environmentally friendly with new roofing.
An exciting initiative from the WEA, the Green Award promotes the WEA’s commitment to green matters in adult education.
The award was created to recognise individuals or groups in Scotland who adopt or promote innovative educational approaches to green issues in creative and sustainable ways. Any individual or self-funding community group can be nominated, and self-nomination is also encouraged. Nominations must show evidence of addressing one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Ray said: “WEA Scotland would like to congratulate Bonnymuir Green Community Trust as the winner of our Green Award Competition. Their submission was outstanding, and we look forward to the outcome from their project in due course.
“The WEA is proud to recognise individuals and community groups that support and understand the importance of the green impact. Volunteering, membership and participation are at the heart of what we do. As an organisation, we support similar working models in the wider community.”
Runner-ups One Seed Forward is a community growing organisation led by volunteers. Their mission is to encourage people of all ages to grow their own food, to eat sustainably and healthily, and to share their knowledge and produce with others in the community.
