Course overview

The renowned artist L. S Lowry was born in Manchester in a town called Stretford in the Victorian age of 1887. His work is very individual instantly and highly recognised as well as being celebrated throughout the United Kingdom and beyond. The course will be delivered by power point presentation and lecture , handouts will be given where appropriate. The session is tailored to allow learners the opportunity to consolidate their learning as the course is delivered by discussion of their learning outcomes and opinions in a friendly and engaging environment and there will be fun group activities during the course to check on understanding and learning.

Course description

It is intriguing to study the work of L. S Lowry. During the session we will explore his technique , application methods , training and his influences. Initially we will look at his early life and contacts , relationships and career , this will open the door for us to discover how he became the artist that he was . We will discover events which occurred in his later life and his personal influences for his artworks.

The session enables us to explore Lowry and his subject matter as well as his colour palette , and interestingly how this sometimes changed and why.

By the end of the session, we can answer the question: Why did he paint matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs and kids on the corner of the street that wore sparking clogs ?.What inspired this song which was sung by a choir of children ? We will look at his portraiture an analyse it .

We will look at and comprehend fully how his iconic art gave rise to an entire art gallery in his name.
