The course aims to introduce the students to the artistic inheritance of the Sienese Republic between the late thirteenth and the mid sixteenth centuries through the examination of works created for the government, the Church, and for private patrons by master artists and sculptors.. The Day School will consist of four session, each dedicated to a particular aspect of Sienese art. A brief introduction to the history of the city will be followed by an examination of its outstanding monuments such as the magnificent Duomo and the Palazzo Pubblico. In the second session we shall examine the fourteenth century decorative schemes devised to embellish these buildings.such as the enigmatic Good and Bad Government created by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. After lunch the session will be devoted to the important role played by sculpture in the life of the city and finally we seek to assess the Mannerist works of the sixteenth century.
