Course overview

Florence is one of the most beautiful and artistically endowed cities in Europe, and although recent scholarship has looked critically at her claim to be the epicentre of the ‘Italian Renaissance’, it remains true that many important advances in painting were made there between 14C-16C. This course aims to re-examine Florence’s position in the ‘Renaissance’ by studying both the role played by the patrons, the wealthy merchant bankers like the Medici, and the artists such as Botticelli, Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci, and many others.

Course description

Florence has long been considered not only one of the most beguiling cities of Europe but also a major centre of advances in painting techniques in the 15C and 16C. However, more recent scholarship has tended to emphasise the importance of alternative regional centres and questioned the existence of the phenomenon known as the ‘Renaissance’. This course will aim to re-examine both of these concepts. We shall consider the financial importance of Florence which enabled the rise of wealthy patrons such as the Medici, the Pazzi and the Rucellai. We shall also consider the social background of these wealthy men which led them to pour riches into the beautifying of their city. And of course, we shall look closely at the great artists such as Botticelli and Leonardo and others, to study the techniques and materials available to them which enabled them to create works in their studios which are still considered amongst the world’s most precious paintings. This is a course for everyone who loves Italy, Florence or just painting to come and enjoy.
