Course overview

Are you fascinated by art and how it developed, and would like to know more? The story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus has been at the forefront of western art for 2,000 years - from early inscriptions in the catacombs, medieval altarpieces and Leonardo’s Last Supper, to the twentieth century works of artists such as Marc Chagall and Graham Sutherland. This lavishly illustrated six week course takes you through the Easter story through the eyes of the major artists.

Course description

During the course you will be guided through the meaning of the Easter stories, and examine their historicity. How these stories were interpreted by Europe’s major artists will form our focus. Palm Sunday as imagined by Giotto; Leonardo’s Last Supper; the resurrection of Jesus as portrayed by Rubens. We will examine works of art covering the whole 2,000 years of Christian history, including 20th century works such as those by Stanley Spencer and and Graham Sutherland. The list is rich and long. Each week students will be shown about 80 images illustrating each element of the Easter story in turn. Time will be given for questions and discussion, and there will be suggestions for further study.

No previous knowledge or experience of either art history or theology is required, and the course will be taught at whatever level is suitable for the participants.

The course tutor, David Brindley, has been teaching for the WEA for four years. He has Masters Degree in Art History, Philosophy and Theology.
