Course overview

To introduce students to the art of drawing in a relaxed and supportive environment. Following on from Creative Painting Q00014040, this course takes students further into the basics of sketching and then drawing to produce convincing and vivid images. It provides step by step instructions on positioning the use of line, light and shade and proportion as well as drawing techniques such as pencil and charcoal. The course is suitable for both beginners as well as experienced students. The course will provide you with an understanding of the methods, materials and concepts required to create both ‘correctly’ and expressively drawn pictures.

Course description

Based on pencil and charcoal, this course discusses all the basic techniques used in drawing such as line, using light and shade, cross-hatching and chiaroscuro. Working from enlarged photographs as well as objects, students learn to accurately draw, using light, shade and line to create a good likeness of the subject. Supported by detailed handouts the course explains how the technical side of drawing (like perspective and measuring proportions) can support more intuitive and individual approaches to the subject.

Building upon Creative Painting Q00014040, and using a structured and step-by-step approach, students will learn the skills and techniques necessary to be able to draw more confidently. Creating convincing drawings that have a sense of shape and form is difficult to do, and this course looks at various techniques used to do this. By learning to interpret objects and scenes in their abstract elements (using shape, tone & line), you will gain confidence in how to draw in a structured and methodical manner. The course offers a balance between traditional academic techniques (used by the old masters); and also more contemporary approaches focusing on mark making and spontaneity.
