Course description

Embark on a captivating journey where the art of bookbinding meets the precision of mathematics in our unique course, "Binding Dimensions." Explore the rich history and intricate techniques of bookbinding using techniques from different parts of the world, while unravelling some of the mathematical mysteries that underpin its craftsmanship.

Throughout this immersive experience, you'll discover how mathematical principles such as geometry, proportion, and measurement are integral to every stage of the bookbinding process. From calculating spine width and cover dimensions to mastering the alignment of signatures, you'll learn how mathematical precision enhances the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of your bound creations.

Through hands-on workshops, you'll develop essential bookbinding skills, including stitching, folding, and gluing, while integrating mathematical concepts seamlessly into your practice. Guided by an experienced instructor, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and mathematics, as you transform simple materials into beautifully bound books.

Materials and Tools:

• A4 Greyboard (or any stiff cardboard)

• A4 Cartridge paper and/or a selection of different A4 papers

• Decorative covering paper

• Awl

• Bone folder

• PVA Glue and glue brush

• Needle and thick thread

• Pencil, ruler, scissors
