Welcome to our 6-hour Measure Up- Introduction to Sewing Course! This short course is designed for sewing enthusiasts of all levels who want to improve their numerical skills specifically for the art of sewing. Over the course, students will dive in-to fundamental numerical concepts essential for accurate and efficient sewing projects. Whether you are a seasoned drummer or just wanting to get started, this practical class in African drumming will inspire you with music and culture. We will be using the Djembe Drums which are a percussion instrument originating from West Africa. Drums will be provided for your use during the class. Our experienced tutor will guide you to play the Djembe drum as part of a group of friendly, like-minded people. You will learn to use the primary notes, referred to as ‘bass,’ ‘tone’ and ‘slap’ to create different sounds. No experience needed, just the willingness to have a go and enjoy the music.

This course will teach you plenty of skills on how to mend your clothes beautifully and originally. We will look at the historical art of Sashiko patterns and the Boro mending technique that was used in Japan in the Edo period and also plenty of other Visible mending techniques. There will be plenty of beautiful patterns to choose from and to learn about and to sew yourselves. A grasp of basic hand sewing is needed. We will expand our knowledge on the resources needed throughout the course and learn about the history of this technique. Later on we will also look at other various visible mending techniques and how and why these are used.

Analysing and recreating elements of traditional masterpieces will help you understand the principles of cutting and laying used centuries ago. Have you ever wondered how to look at a painting or what draws you to it? This session will give you an introduction and some key pathways to develop your understanding and appreciation of paintings. Looking at how the painter makes depth and Space or how the painter uses colour and light. We will mainly study the technical and visual aspects of a painting: What is a painting made of? And how to look at its scale, format, composition, colours, lines and texture? This is quite literally an “eye-opener”, and should make your next visits to art galleries even more enjoyable!
