Craft: Exploring Andamento in Mosaics Ancient & Modern - Advanced

In this brand new course, the aim is to focus on Andamento, in other words, how the tiles are laid - and looking at the array of Opus styles- both ancient and modern. This is an opportunity to examine some traditional mosaic practices, as well as contemporary styles, and to learn from what the artists set out to achieve. Further to this you will be deepening your knowledge by understanding mosaic terminology, for example “Keystoning” This is the traditional way to create curves which today is invaluable when creating numbers for house signs. Transferable skills will be gained through this course such as IT skills for research, numeracy skills when transposing patterns and calculating costs, and social skills when interacting in the group setting, discussing and sharing feedback. You will be encouraged to push your own boundaries by reflecting on your strengths and weaknesses during the feedback sessions and setting your own goals. All equipment is provided, or you can bring your own. Most students will need to purchase some materials from the tutor at cost price; depending on the project this might include china, glass, bases, adhesive and grout, etc. Aprons are provided or you can bring your own.
