Art Practical: From Snow to Blossoms
An introduction to practical drawing and watercolour covering landscape and natural forms, changing through the seasons. Working with a variety of drawing materials and watercolours, we will look at artists who work with a range of techniques and create art inspired by or in the style of an artist or a particular art movement. This course is taught online. You will need to get your own art materials for this course and participate in the sessions by creating practical artwork, upload your artwork and discuss with other learners. Discover for the first time, or re-visit an old favourite, this course will introduce you to a wide range of artworks from the national collection of Tate Britain in London. We explore specific works by historical, modern and contemporary artists in relation to wider cultural and social contexts. Art Appreciation: The Thames in Art
The Thames, its bridges, embankments, and the monuments standing alongside it, are world-renowned symbols of London. Over the centuries, artists have represented the river from many different viewpoints, for all sorts of occasions, and in a variety of artistic styles. From De Jongh and Canaletto to Turner and Monet, the Thames has been represented many. As we retrace their steps, we will study the sights and events they depicted. From the Thames Estuary to Cookham, we will see sights of mayoral processions, regattas, busy tugboats and Thames barge, highlight the river’s many functions. As we study these works of art – some well-known and other rarely ever seen – we will discuss the river's artistic and historical significance.

History: Brushstrokes of History
On this nine week history course held in Lutterworth we will learn what art can teach us about the times in which they were created. We will look at key events in the history of the Netherlands from 1300-1600; the significant political events in France before the Revolution, and also Napoleon’s rise to power. No prior knowledge is expected, just an interest in history and culture – the course will be accompanied by images of artworks. Learners are invited to ask questions if they choose to.
Topics of art will include the history of Antwerp - Charles V abdication; and the beginning of the Dutch Revolt and becoming a Protestant-dominated city; and Amsterdam; Louis XIV and the succession by Louis XV in 1715; and the reign of Louis XVI to 1789 when the French Revolution begins.

Art Appreciation: Mirrors and Reflections in Art
Mirrors are present in several masterpieces, such as Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, Velazquez’s Las Meninas and Manet’s Un Bar aux Folies-Bergères. In these, mirrors and the reflections they reveal are often enigmatic as they add another dimension to what we (think we) see and deepen the work’s meaning.
In this session, we will look at the different ways in which mirrors and reflected images have been included in works of art. As we do so, we will investigate the symbolism of the mirror in Western art and culture.
