Personal Development: Map reading (stage2) Contours, compasses and counting
The course will build on the learners’ existing basic map reading skills to introduce the use of a compass, interpretation of relief (ups and downs) and the estimating of distance.
We will undertake exercises which consolidate basic skills as well as introducing orientation of a map with a compass, taking bearings .
The overall focus of the course will be using maps to facilitate safe and enjoyable access to the countryside.
All of the learning will then be applied to discuss ways in which good planning can contribute to the sense of well-being that a varied and stimulating walk can provide.

History: JB Priestley's Journey
This course focuses on J.B. Priestley’s (1894-1984) journey around England in the 1930s, which was published as a book English Journey in 1934. At the time Priestley was a well-known novelist, playwright, screenwriter, social commentator and perhaps the most popular English writer of his day. Sponsored by his publisher Victor Gollancz and the Daily Mail , Priestley set out to travel the length and breadth of 1930s England from Southampton to the Black Country, the North East and Newcastle, Lincoln, Norfolk and Norwich. In doing so he revealed the condition of the English people, their society and their culture.

The BBC Play for Today strand ran from 1970 to 1984, an anthology series of one-off made for Television plays covering a broad range of genres from social realism to science fiction and anything in between. The plays also allowed a variety of then new writers and directors to express themselves on screen in an inventive and original platform allowing for experimentation in terms of style and themes, for many writers this was the start of a fruitful career. This course examines several of these plays, considering what made some into landmarks of TV drama, why they so often courted controversy and what shifted in the television landscape to bring about their decline.
