It can help you show employers that you have the essential skills they look for. Functional Skills qualifications are free if you don't already have a GCSE in English or Maths at grades A*-C, or 4-9. We'll check your level and any previous qualifications before you start. This ensures you are on the correct course.

During this friendly course you will have the opportunity to consider a number of novels that were published in the 1830s as the start of an exploration of literature published through the decades of Victoria’s long reign. In order to get some sense of how literature was beginning to cross borders in this decade, you will look at works by English authors and also a French and an American writer. The following works will be studied: Old Man Goriot (Honoré de Balzac, 1835); The Vicar of Wrexhill (Frances Trollope, 1837); The Pickwick Papers (Charles Dickens, 1837); The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (Edgar Allan Poe, 1838).

Many of us are unenthusiastic in the run up and aftermath of a General Election and a sizeable minority of us do not vote at all. To provide an overview of the social impact of World War 2 in relation to the Battle of Britain and the Blitz The course will also highlight the new global balance of power after the War in relation to the upsurge of America and the USSR as being the new power brokers in the Post-War world as evidenced by the new ‘Iron Curtain’ The second half of the course will feature the post war Labour government establishing a Welfare State and focussing on post war reconstruction as well as the early years of the reign of Elizabeth II in the 1950s

Want to be able to make your own books? Then this is the course for you. By the end of the course you will know what terms such as signature and gsm mean. You will be able to recycle unwanted paper into new paper to use in a book. You will learn how pages can be stitched together to create a book. You will understand how different types of books can be made from the simplest, using one piece of paper, to a covered hardback book. You will also learn how fabric can be used to make a book and what a memory book is and how to make one.

Enhance your mosaic making skills to a higher level. You will be learning from the ancients! Analysing and recreating elements of traditional masterpieces will help you understand the principles of cutting and laying used centuries ago. You will find that these techniques will be beneficial in your mosaic practice today. In addition, you will be encouraged to research contemporary styles of Andamento using less traditional materials and use your knowledge to create a unique design.
