Course overview

Want to be able to make your own books? Then this is the course for you. By the end of the course you will know what terms such as signature and gsm mean. You will be able to recycle unwanted paper into new paper to use in a book. You will learn how pages can be stitched together to create a book. You will understand how different types of books can be made from the simplest, using one piece of paper, to a covered hardback book. You will also learn how fabric can be used to make a book and what a memory book is and how to make one.

Course description

If you have an interest in how books are made but don't feel you have the confidence or the skills to make one, then this course is for you.

The course will cover the following which will enable you to make a variety of books, both using paper and also fabric.

How to choose what paper to use for a book

How to recycle unwanted paper into new paper

How to make a book from one piece of paper

What is meant by mountain or valley folds

How pages are stitched together to make a book

How to cover a book

Some ideas for decorating books

How to make a book using found and recycled materials

You will learn that it is possible to make books without some of the traditional (and sometimes expensive) bookbinding equipment.

Once you have completed the course you will be able to make books the shape, size, number of pages etc., you want to use as well as making them for gifts and even to sell.

Do not worry if you have never made any sort of book before as help and guidance will be given throughout the course by our helpful and supportive tutor.
