Course overview

This ten-week course will present and explore classical music from across the breadth of its development, from early music through to classical music being written right now. Over the course of these sessions we will consider how the subject matter, style and context of composers from a range of diverse backgrounds has contributed to the evolution of music, as well as considering other genres for reference. We will examine the background of each composer and the individual pieces that we listen to along with reference to quality critical appraisals and notes on each one. The sessions will combine active listening and audio-visual materials with lively, inclusive and hopefully invigorating discussion. Whether you are just coming into the world of classical music (and other genres) or have been listening to it for some time you will be welcome along to these sessions.

Course description

On this online 10-week course we will listen to, explore and enjoy a wide range of classical music from its earliest eras through to the present day by well-known and more neglected composers. In doing so each week we will engage with several individual works in different forms and from different historical eras in each session thinking about the circumstances of and reasons behind their creation, and the particulars of the sonic landscape they offer through ideas such as genre, style, technique and arrangement, this will place each piece in context and also dive into the way it was constructed and is received. To complement this we will also pay attention to the life and background of

each different composer and how their approach to composition contributes to a distinctive oeuvre. We will also listen to examples of music from other genres such as world, jazz, film music, contemporary/neo/post-classical, ambient and electronic music.
