Course overview

This interesting and thought-provoking session explores the controversial fine art created by unknown artist Banksy. From his first works in the early 1990s Banksy has fascinated society and mobilised the press with his expressive graffiti art . The course will be delivered by power point presentation and lecture , handouts will be given where appropriate. The session is tailored to allow learners the opportunity to consolidate their learning as the course is delivered by discussion of their learning outcomes and opinions in a friendly and engaging environment and there will be fun group activities during the course to check on understanding and learning.

Course description

The session examines Banksys career in detail and in chronological order . Is he an artist or a vandal ? How has opinion on his work changed over time ? We begin by looking at the concept of graffiti art in general . This course also links to other possible art history courses as it begins to explain in more depth the history of graffiti art and its purpose within society. Graffiti art is a world wide creative output .We will look at the work of other graffiti artiststheir methods and the emotional and social reasons which impact upon people producing this type of art. During this session we enjoy the political and social messages as we see his work , some of which can be considered comical. We wonder and speculate about his identity , which to date is still unknown despite his work selling for considerable amounts of money. We discuss and explore how the financial gain has changed opinion of his work .

Importantly we explore the possibilities of how he is never seen or caught , his methods accomplices and his possible background and motivations .
