Course overview

Sometimes so subtle has to be almost invisible the story of our monarchy marks the shifts in the way the ruling of our country has changed, and on occasions, has made that shift inevitable. In all this the private views, peccadillos, and prejudices of the monarchs have had have decisive consequences. From George the sixth Toryism nearly creating a constitutional crisis, to Queen Annes underrated political nous manipulating the creation of the United Kingdom ,  a feat that defied her male Stuart predecessors, we will explore the machinations of kings queens and consorts from the start of the seventeenth century to the twentieth.

Course description

 Despite it being the world’s first successful constitutional monarchy and the power of the monarch being thus limited, their personality did affect the course of history. This we will look at the changes from the reign of the last Stuart to the death of the longest holder of the office.
