Course overview
All happening here as we examine a series of images and their meaning within their historical context ! Experience the peasant life on a medieval manor, share a block with tragic Lady Jane, smell the stench of rotting Streltsy and gaze down (apparently with the world and his wife) at James Wolfe at Quebec ! Glance into the heart of darkness in Spain and follow the bloodstained tricolour in 1830 ! Enjoy an escape into the fresh air of Wallington, the dream-like scenery of rural medieval France and the idyllic landscape of Surrey. Can we do it ? Yes we can !
Course description
The course will cover a selected range of images which encapsulate a period or some aspect of a period of history. They will be considered in their own right as pieces of art or historical illustration but will also be used to access the wider context from which they have come. They will be approached chronologically. Some of the images will be chosen from British history and some from European history. The methods employed will include segmented powerpoint presentations and discussion of the themes identified, as well as the usual class interaction.
