This course is re-run of the Spring term course: Embark on a fascinating journey through time and space as we unravel the mysteries and marvels of the Silk Road. This 6-week course offers a comprehensive exploration of one of the most significant trade routes in history, tracing its origins, evolution, and enduring legacy. From the bustling marketplaces of ancient cities to the cross-cultural exchanges that shaped empires, we will delve into the rich tapestry of cultures, economies, and ideas that flourished along this ancient network of trade routes. This course will offer a rich interdisciplinary exploration of the Silk Road, drawing on historical texts, archaeological evidence, visual media, and discussion to deepen understanding of its pivotal influence in world history.

Course description

This course aims to provide learners with a deep understanding of the historical significance and impact of the Silk Road on global trade, cultural exchange, and the formation of empires.

• Starting with the origins of the Silk Road from its origin as a trade route connecting China, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean, analysing the key commodities traded and their economic importance. Examining the opening up trade routes to the West, and considering the Roman Empire's demand for luxury goods from the East and its impact on Silk Road trade.

• Exploration of the golden age of the Silk road and the cities on the route as centres of trade culture and innovation and how they lead to the spread of religions ideas, technologies and pandemics along the Road. Examining the Silk Road's role in the rise and fall of empires, including the Mongol Empire and the Timurid Empire.

Exploration of the decline of the Silk Road in the early modern period due to shifts in global trade routes and political upheavals. Examining how the Silk Road has influenced Western perceptions of the East. Lastly considering the current measures to create a new ‘Silk Road’ and consider its likely impact.
