Course overview

Join us for a guided heritage walk as part of the WEA London Festival Art and About. Meeting at 11 AM on 19th June by the ticket barriers at Blackfriars Station (south side of the Thames), we’ll explore the Southbank—an area renowned for its vibrant culture and tourism. Once one of London’s most polluted neighbourhoods, Southbank has transformed into a beloved, tree-lined riverside destination visited by millions each year. Discover the area’s rich history, uncover the forces that shaped its evolution, and see firsthand how it became the cultural landmark it is today. The walk will conclude near Waterloo Station.

Course description

Join local Lambeth tour guide Selina Rice for a fascinating journey through the Southbank’s rich and diverse history. Once fields and marshes, later dominated by factories, warehouses, and car parks, this area was home to only a handful of residents in the 1970s. How did it transform into the vibrant cultural and green riverside district we see today? Who were the people and communities that shaped its evolution beyond the City of London’s walls?

This guided walk takes place on flat terrain with one short flight of 15 steps. Come and explore Southbank’s hidden past and dynamic present with us!
