Course overview

The course will explore the enriching links between stories, art and music, concentrating of works from 1920s. From the surrealistic art in France and expressionist art in Germany to the many operas, ballets and symphonies which characterise that tumultuous period. In America, it is frequently referred to as the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Jazz Age", while in Europe the period is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Twenties" because of the economic boom following World War I (1914–1918). French speakers refer to the period as the "Années folles" ("crazy years") emphasizing the era's social, artistic, and cultural dynamism.

"This course delves into the dynamic and transformative decade of the 1920s, exploring the intricate links between visual art, literature, and music. Students will journey through the surrealistic landscapes of French art, the bold expressions of German Expressionism, and the vibrant operas, ballets, and symphonies that marked this tumultuous period. The course will highlight the cultural renaissance of the ""Roaring Twenties"" or ""Jazz Age"" in America and the ""Golden Twenties"" in Europe, a time of economic prosperity and artistic flourishing following the devastation of World War I. Each week, presentations will feature a curated selection of artworks, films, operas, music, and poetry that encapsulate the spirit of the 1920s. Students will engage with masterpieces from renowned artists, composers, and writers, gaining an understanding of how the decade's artistic expressions were intertwined with its historical context. By examining these diverse mediums, students will develop a comprehensive appreciation for the rich tapestry of 1920s culture and its lasting impact on the arts."
