Course overview
Course description
This practical online course has been designed to expand on beginner textiles techniques and
knowledge such as layering fabrics, balancing colours and how to simplify photos into colour blocks
and patterns. The course will cover how create a theme or tell a story and takes you through
composition and construction of the fabric elements, then finishes with how to stitch lettering that
flows and how to add the stitched letters in the form of a word or short phrase.
You will learn how to use linear stitch techniques to create texture and bring detail to the pictures
being created. The course is fun, creative and brings together different elements that are great for
experimentation. There is a great opportunity to use fabrics you may already have, if you are new
to stitching, you could start collecting small pieces of fabric/old bits of clothing and build a small
collection of colours and textures that you like. This online course has the benefits of learning from
home but also sharing your work with other learners, discussion and tutor feedback. You will be
able to use the skills you have learned to move onto other textile and sewing based courses.
By the end of the course, you will be able to,
Demonstrate how to translate your ideas into textile work.
Assemble fabrics to create a textile collage.
Draw lettering that will be transferred onto your fabric piece.
Embroider lettering onto the fabric background.
