Course overview
Course description
This course aims to give an overview of the major developments, movements and factors which shaped cinema in Britain between 1895 and 1970 and how it reflected changes in society. It will explore how British film-makers led the world in cinematic innovation in the early days of film, only to stagnate by the beginning of World War I. The industry’s revival during the 1930s will be examined, and particular attention will be paid to the pivotal role it played in keeping up morale in World War II. With the predominance of the Rank studios it the 1950s, it will be questioned if this is the most conservative period of British film-making. Finally, what were the factors that led to the industry ruling the world during the Swinging Sixties?
This course will also pay tribute to the stars and directors who were responsible for many of British cinema’s most memorable moments, plus also exposing some of its most embarrassing secrets! If you have ever wondered how cinema developed in this country and what it tells us about the concerns of British society – class, sex, the north-south divide – this informal course will provide all the answers.
