Course overview

The course aims to introduce learners to the idea of how the role of the cinematic costume designer can be crucial in making or breaking a whole film. Costumes can evoke bygone eras, tell us hidden truths about characters, make outlandish otherworldly futures believable, and so much more. With a wealth of clips and background material.

Course description

They say clothes make the man – or woman – and nowhere is that truer than onscreen. Over five weeks we’ll examine the different ways costume in film has been crucial to storytelling over more than a century of cinema, from the bold and clever use of colour, through costumes that add both character and period realism, to examples of how film costume can suggest futures both utopian and dystopian. We’ll stop off on the way to take a deep dive into the humble men’s suit and what it can tell us – in the right hands – and we’ll also pause to look at how the world of cinema clothes and real-world fashion have influenced each other, with surprising results. No prior knowledge is needed.
