Course overview
Course description
Learning about Abstract Art is a fascinating and rewarding topic; it tracks an evolving story looking at different ages, from 19th Century innovators such as JMW Turner, through to Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Modernism in general, right up to the 21st Century. Inspired by these examples, shown at the beginning of each lesson in an interactive visual presentation, we will develop skills in a range of drawing and painting media, including drawing inks, chalk and oil pastels, watercolour, acrylic, collage and mixed media. Please have some equipment ready, but advice will be given on materials during the course. The tutor (a professional exhibiting abstract artist) will show a filmed demo to give you an example of how to achieve this (and sometimes what not to do!) The group will then be directed to carry out the task, having been placed in a ‘breakout room’ in which a smaller selection of students gather in order to be given appropriate advice and direction from the tutor. The emphasis will be on adventurous experimentation. Substantial resources for each session will be placed in the session module on Canvas. This course is for complete beginners and those looking to improve their skills and develop their own style.
