The workshop is open to everyone who likes to write, from beginners to published, and all genres from poetry to prose. This is a unique and wonderful opportunity to spend a day in the company of other writers, exploring the immediate natural and human-made environment. It’s also a chance to share your written work, if you wish, at a local festival.

Course description

Creative Writing in the Landscape: Writing the River Tamar is a one-day workshop exploring the local environment from a stunning location overlooking the Tamar Bridge. It’s an introduction to ‘writing in the field’ – a form of nature and travel writing that takes the writer out into the landscape, to record the natural and human environment around them using all their senses. There is so much to record around the Tamar Bridge, including river, transport and shipping activity - you’ll have plenty to write about. The day will start with fun warm-up writing exercises and a discussion on nature and travel writing. This will be followed by information on how to write with the senses and a chance to gather notes out in the landscape. After a break for lunch, everyone will have a chance to write their story, narrative or poem, with support available. You can share what you’ve written on the day if you’d like – by reading aloud to the group and/ or submitting your words for a display at a local festival in Calstock. The day will be accessible for all levels of writer. All you need to bring is pen and paper, enthusiasm and sharpened senses!
