Art Appreciation: Whistler - An Experimental Approach

This course will explore different aspects of the work of James McNeill Whistler and how this both conformed to and challenged artistic conventions of the period. We will explore the way Whistler approached formal portraiture and experimented with composition, which contrasts to the more experimental side of his work exploring colour and light. This juxtaposition of opposing styles presents a fascinating insight into the artist's creative process. You will discover the way this artist's innovative approach painting 'nocturnes' experimented with light effects and the interaction of colour. There will also be a focus on the way he was considered controversial with this approach, highlighted by his court case against the criticisms of Ruskin - the extent of which brings focus to the way Whistler's experimental approach was perceived as unconventional by a contemporary audience.
