Course overview
Course description
This practical and inspiring course is designed for those who would like to develop their own individual style and direction when exploring portrait skills. Starting with the anatomy of the head, you will be guided through the basic steps and techniques when studying a character. Using Photography, you will then go on to learn about directing and how to confidently capture a head and shoulder portrait. This could then be used to either draw from or manipulate, using mixed media, for example painting onto its surface or collaging. As the course progresses, you will be invited to look at and talk about well-known Portrait Artists and Photographers, who each use very alternative methods when expressing the model’s identity. You will have the opportunity to reflect on poses, symbolism, motifs, and backgrounds, all of which will help you to create an original final portrait. You will also learn how to define the process to prepare for a portrait and experiment with a range of different styles and techniques. You will also be encouraged to share and discuss your ideas with other group members, as you create your personal outcome.
