Literature: Rediscovering Women Authors: Two comic novels by Angela Thirkell

In this course we will read and discuss books by an author who excelled at comic writing and whose books have mostly been overlooked in recent years. Angela Thirkell’s novels, set in Anthony Trollope’s fictional county of Barsetshire, offer a gently satirical take on social mores and pretensions in upper and middle-class society of the 1930s and 1940s. We will be focusing on two comic novels: High Rising (1933) and Northbridge Rectory (1941). Through friendly and accessible discussions of both texts, we will learn more about their stories, characters and themes, and consider the nature of their author’s distinctive comic voice.

Art Appreciation: Scottish Art 1750 - 1914

This course explores fascinating artworks made by Scottish artists from c. 1750 to 1914. We explore ways in which Scottish artists responded to European styles (for example in History Painting and Portraiture in the 18c and Japan in the late 19c) at the same time as making distinctively Scottish work. The course covers oil painting, watercolours, photography, design and some architecture. We also look at some multi-media work, including Margaret Macdonald’s murals in gesso, paint and applied beads. We look at artistic groups and examine ways in which members influenced one another as well as responding to European art: examples include the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists.

Literature: Uncovering the World of Myth

In this 10-week, online course learners will read, explore and enjoy stories from an array of the great texts that belong to the mythic traditions of the Classical world and wider antiquity; you will consider the hold that mythology continues to have over the modern mind, thinking about how and why these works and stories still resonate today and have persisted for so long, as well as setting them against their own time and seeking to understand their original intent. In doing so we will think about genre, style and form, as well as considering authorship and culture through appraising the backgrounds and context of each text, and particular writers, whilst also looking into more modern art and culture that has been influenced by and reworked these myths, this will add crucial context but also dive into the modern reading of the texts and myths. All texts will be read in English translation in a supportive atmosphere and with a knowledgeable tutor
