Learning about Abstract Art is a fascinating and rewarding topic; it tracks an evolving story looking at different ages, from 19th Century innovators such as JMW Turner, through to Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Modernism in general, right up to the 21st Century. This course will also introduce you to some lesser- known female artists who have been formerly neglected by the art establishment. Inspired by these examples, shown at the beginning of each lesson in an interactive visual presentation, we will develop skills in a range of drawing and painting media, including drawing inks, chalk and oil pastels, watercolour, acrylic, collage and mixed media. This course is for complete beginners and those looking to improve their skills and develop their own style. Learn to Draw and Paint Animals in Watercolour and Mixed Media Unleash your creativity and connect with nature's beauty in our one-day course, "Learn to Draw and Paint Animals in Watercolour and Mixed Media," hosted at the welcoming Springbourne Library and facilitated by The WEA (Workers' Educational Association). This inspiring workshop invites participants to explore the vibrant world of animal artistry through watercolour and mixed media techniques. Throughout the course, you'll be guided through the process of capturing the essence and character of animals in your artwork. With expert instruction, you'll learn to use line, tone, texture, and colour to bring your chosen animal portrait to life in a unique and expressive way.

This 5 week course delves into the works of five local artists featuring Arthur Lett-Haines, Jennifer Andrews, Anthony Atkinson, Charles Bartlett and Malcolm H. Carter. Each week explores key art concepts including, colour and composition through samples of their work. You will engage in group discussions, take notes and recall information. By the end of the course, you will be able to notice significant local artists describe their artistic methods, spot similarities and differences amongst local artists, deconstruct essential components of artworks and select a preferred piece based on personal opinion.

This ten-week course aims to provide lots of ideas and techniques for working spontaneously and expressively as well as how to create a variety of different textures and effects. You will also have the opportunity to share ideas and take part in weekly discussions about your artworks with the tutor and other students on the course.

The theme this term is ‘Learn from the Best’, which will give us a focus for exploring a range of arts materials and techniques. It is a traditional method to examine and copy famous and excellent artists to learn their techniques. We will be looking at a selection of artists, learning from their style and recreating our own original works in that style. Studying a variety of artists will give us a focus for exploring a range of different arts materials and techniques including pastels, watercolour, oil, acrylic and other paints. This is a friendly and supportive group, offering a space for experimentation.

Have you ever wondered how to look at a painting and how to figure out what it means? This course will give you keys to develop your understanding and appreciation of paintings and their history. Based on the study of many concrete examples, taken from a variety of historical periods and styles, we will study all the aspects of a painting, from its format and technique, to its subject matter. As we do so, you will have many occasions to apply this knowledge and techniques for yourself.
