History: Artists at War
How art has been employed by belligerent countries in the First and Second World Wars, but also to represent war, often patriotically, over many centuries. We’ll look at a range of different examples from western countries to show the different approaches to art depicting war and its effects and how sometimes this has been directed by governments, not always simply for propaganda purposes.

History: How we used to Live – Social Housing
This course will give you an outline of the history of social housing in Britain over the last 200 years. Housing became a huge issue as a result of the Industrial Revolution as Britain’s industrial cities expanded and thousands of low-paid workers looked for somewhere to live. We will look at a range of ‘answers’ to this problem from cheap housing that rapidly turned into overcrowded slums to model villages built by some factory owners to house their workforce. Then we will explore the development of slum clearance and council housing schemes in the 20th century, before looking at possible causes and solutions for the current housing shortages.

Literature: The American Short Story
The postwar period saw a major change in the significance of the short story in the USA and Canada, as it developed into a form for more serious explorations of character and psychology.
Each week we will look at two stories by a major North American writer and discuss how they use such techniques as narration, subtext, and imagery to portray complex, layered characters. Featured writers include Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, John Updike, Mavis Gallant, Shirley Jackson, and Elizabeth Strout.
In the final two weeks we will look at stories about Christmas in particular.

Art Appreciation: Expressionism: from Kirchner to Kandinsky and Kokoschka (1905-1939)
In this short course, we will focus on Expressionism, a key art movement of the beginning of the 20th century. Starting around 1905 in Germany and Austria, with painters and sculptors such as Ersnt Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, the expressionist style soon pervaded other art forms, such as cinema. Expressionist works of art were raw and energetic, shocking, sometimes dark and apocalyptic, sometimes light and spiritual, and always intensely free. If you have ever wondered what is Expressionism, how it started and developed, and why these artists painted in such a way, this course is for you!

Humanities: Trent to Mersey In the wake of narrow boat ‘Cressy’
In 1939 Tom and Angela Rolt set out to explore the canals of England in the narrow boat ‘Cressy’. The account of their cruise was a book called Narrow Boat and this inspired the national movement to preserve and cherish our inland waterways. Eighty years later Alastair Clark set out on a bike to follow the part of their voyage which followed the Trent and Mersey canal.

In this one-off session, we will attempt to uncover the actual story behind the event, exploring the truce or truces through letters, reports, photographs and retrospective accounts. The course will be interesting to those with an interest in the Great War, and the manner in which that conflict has been interpreted in the century since its ending, but the course will also appeal to those with an interest in how societies shape and define themselves by their myths.
