Art Appreciation: Early Quattrocento Italian Art
This course will investigate the emergence of a ‘Renaissance’ style (or styles) of Italian art over the period 1400-1450, considering a range of centres of artistic production, but with a particular emphasis on Florence. We will look in detail at a series of major works of painting and sculpture, in order to track how a new, self-consciously ‘modern’ style of art paradoxically came into being through artists re-inventing versions of an ‘antique’ classicism.
We will focus on a wide range of artists, but especially the contributions of Donatello, Ghiberti, and Masaccio in Florence, and figures such as Sassetta, Pisanello, Uccello, and Jacopo Bellini from other centres in the Italian peninsula.

Creative Writing: Nothing Rhymes with Orange - Writing in Rhyme
This course will explore how to produce poems which rhyme. In the twentieth century, particularly post-war, vers libre and syllabic verse have proliferated, yet poets persist in writing rhymed and rhythmical poetry.
During these five weeks, we will examine how modern poets deploy rhyme and integrate it into the rhythms of ordinary speech and a demotic vocabulary.
Each session will be a workshop, which examines and puts into practice your own experiments in rhyme, allowing you to develop first drafts and then finished versions of at least three new poems.
The workshops will be mutually supportive at all times, supportive and inspirational.

Art Appreciation: The Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is indeed a jewel box of great painting. With works by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Perugino and Michelangelo, some of the greatest works of the Italian Renaissance are to be found there. But this is more than just a collection of great works. It is also the pope’s private chapel and so these works were created not just for display but to relay a greater message to the world, But how many of the thousands of visitors really understand that message or what these works are about? In this study day we shall seek to decode the 'messages' contained in these great works and see what Sixtus IV and Julius II and their artists were really saying to us.

Art Appreciation: Painting in Early Renaissance Florence
Florence is one of the most beautiful and artistically endowed cities in Europe, and although recent scholarship has looked critically at her claim to be the epicentre of the ‘Italian Renaissance’, it remains true that many important advances in painting were made there between 14C-16C. This course aims to re-examine Florence’s position in the ‘Renaissance’ by studying both the role played by the patrons, the wealthy merchant bankers like the Medici, and the artists such as Botticelli, Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci, and many others.
