WEA courses

This course is for anyone with an interest in history and the English Language. It will introduce you to four historical varieties of English and trace the development of English from a cluster of Germanic dialects to one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. The course is open to beginners or people who may have studied the history of English before. It will take place online, over the course of six weeks and presentations and discussions will be readily available after each session.

Come along and join our friendly lipreading group at The Centre in Newlyn. This class is suitable for all levels of lipreaders and is ideal for those recently experiencing hearing loss. Our experienced tutor will guide you through the basics of lipreading and show you how to practice your lipreading skills in everyday life. Research has shown that attending a lipreading class can give you greater: • Confidence to communicate with others • Control over your hearing loss, as you develop new communication skills • Independence, as you’re less reliant on others to help you follow conversation (Source RNID.org.uk) You will learn in a supportive environment alongside other learners who will be able to share their experiences of hearing loss and learn how to overcome them together

The internet is vast and fast moving and often our children are more tech savy, this course will cover how you can manage what your children can access in order to increase their safety. The course will also cover a range of digital tools that can help you keep track of your personal budget at the click of a button as well as exploring what applications and sites can have a positive influence on family wellbeing.

Yoga is a wonderful practice that supports our physical and mental well-being. This course will allow you to enjoy all the benefits of yoga whilst taking a deeper focus on yoga practices that help to keep your back healthy. Most people suffer from back ache or pain at some point in their lives. Practicing yoga is a good strategy to both prevent and manage back ache. You will learn practices that help to relieve tension and improve back strength and flexibility. Yoga is a non-competitive practice for everyone, you will be encouraged to move with care for your own body, adapting practices to meet your individual needs in a supportive learning environment.

The course will introduce you to how a Gelli plate can be used with a variety of items to create prints on both paper and fabric. Come along and join the class as you develop new skills or add to previous knowledge. Whether you are a beginner or have previous experience, this course is ideal for anyone with a positive attitude to learning.

This course is designed for learners who would like to develop their own individual style and direction when exploring portrait skills. Starting with the anatomy of the head, you will be guided through the basic steps and techniques when studying a character. Using Photography, you will then go on to learn about directing and how to confidently capture a head and shoulder portrait. This could then be used to either draw from or manipulate, using mixed media, for example painting onto its surface or collaging.

This Mosaic course is designed to introduce you to new craft skills and help you develop a new craft, whilst designing different images and relaxing, enjoying, being creative with others.
