To introduce students to the art of drawing in a relaxed and supportive environment. Following on from Creative Painting Q00014040, this course takes students further into the basics of sketching and then drawing to produce convincing and vivid images. It provides step by step instructions on positioning the use of line, light and shade and proportion as well as drawing techniques such as pencil and charcoal. The course is suitable for both beginners as well as experienced students. The course will provide you with an understanding of the methods, materials and concepts required to create both ‘correctly’ and expressively drawn pictures.

This course will focus on your personal experiences and how these experiences may form the basis not only for autobiography and memoir, but for autobiographical fiction and poetry. The course will be composed of two workshops, each designed to explore one or more areas of personal writing, through discussion, hands-on writing experiments and guidance on how to improve technical aspects of your prose or poetry. By the conclusion of the course you will have completed the first drafts of two pieces of writing. The course will be mutually supportive, stimulating and a good introduction to further creative writing courses with the popular tutor Stephen Smith.

This course is designed to provide ESOL learners with essential knowledge and skills to navigate life in the UK effectively. Through a combination of group activities and the Canvas Virtual Learning Environment, participants will engage in interactive learning experiences that enhance their language proficiency and cultural understanding. The course covers a range of topics relevant to daily life, including personal identity, geographical orientation, community engagement, health, and daily routines.

This course focuses on bolstering confidence through practical language skills necessary for daily interactions. Participants will engage in conversations relevant to various aspects of everyday life. The course aims to empower learners from diverse backgrounds, including those facing socio-economic challenges. Through targeted language instruction and confidence-building exercises, learners will begin to develop essential linguistic abilities vital for active participation in their communities. This short course will cover a range of learning opportunities enabling students to further develop skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking through focus on various elements of grammar and vocabulary. Confidence in English is a taster course tailored for learners thinking about working towards accredited ESOL.

If you do not live in a West Sussex postcode area, please do not apply for this course - thanks for your understanding* On this course we are going to sow some seeds to grow a selection of edible plants: herbs and vegetables on a windowsill. The session is delivered in real time, so you can sow seeds along with me asking questions as we go. A list of suggested resources will be on Canvas before the course begins so you can go shopping. We will explore the limitations of windowsill growing, and the advantages, particularly in relation to cost. We shall see which windowsill crops are economically worth growing, and which aren't! I will cover onward care and harvesting, and any questions will be welcome, as will sharing your own experiences - good and bad!

Ever looked up at the night sky, or the signs of the zodiac, and wondered how the constellations got their names? Why anyone would think those random dots were “obviously” a picture of some strange creature? Or what the stories are behind them? This one-session course picks out some of them that are appropriate to the time of year, and shows why they were important, what their myths are, and how the stories fit together. This is the time when the Perseid meteor shower is at its best, so we’ll look at the story behind Perseus, and his family: Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Pegasus, and a few less well-known. Then we go on to the Summer Triangle of the Swan, the Eagle, and the Lyre. There’s also Capricorn, the half-fish, half-goat, and many more. (57)
