Level of study
Entry Levels 1,2,3: If you have never studied this subject before and you’re not confident in your skills, Entry levels are a good starting point.
Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject
Level 2: Building on basic knowledge or experience. Similar to Grade 4/ C at GCSE or O level in England or Standards in Scotland.
Level 3: Learn about the topic in-depth and have a broad range of skills. Independent working Equivalent to an A level in England or Higher in Scotland.
Beginners: A perfect introduction if you have no experience and skills in this subject.
Improvers: The next step if you have basic skills or knowledge but want to progress them further.
Advanced: Build on the solid experience and skills you have in this subject, applying your skills and knowledge in a more complex way.

Course description
Learn essential skills to use and understand Makaton. Gain knowledge and understanding of different learning and communication difficulties.
This is a safe environment to learn Makaton. The tutor will create a group dynamic where students will feel comfortable to practise their skills.
This course is aimed at adults who would like to learn how to communicate with individuals who use Makaton. It could be useful for you if you’re a teacher, health professional, carer, or family or friend of somebody who uses Makaton.
Depending on your needs, after this course you may be interested in courses in British Sign Language (BLS).
If you need to learn communication skills for professional reasons, you can also study for an accredited qualification. For example, you could take a level 1 award in deaf awareness.
You’ll need access to the internet to take this Makaton course. Your tutor will upload useful materials to Canvas, the WEA’s digital learning platform.
