Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject

Level 3: Learn about the topic in-depth and have a broad range of skills. Independent working Equivalent to an A level in England or Higher in Scotland.
Beginners: A perfect introduction if you have no experience and skills in this subject.
Improvers: The next step if you have basic skills or knowledge but want to progress them further.

Course description
Eastern Europe has produced key figures and movements in film history and some of its most original and thought-provoking works. In this 3-hour session you’ll get an opportunity to find out about a selection of them as a springboard for further exploration, including the new cinemas of Romania and Bulgaria, film-makers like Emir Kusturica and popular cinema from Bosnia. This course is for those interested in film. It is open to those new to film studies and Eastern European cinema as well as those who already have experience. Part of an occasional series of ‘film studies day schools’ it is intended to give participants a first introduction to the cinema of the region as a basis for further study. During our session, we will look at selected clips from a range of films and discuss them. It isn’t a prerequisite to watch all of the films in their entirety for this course. Background on the historic, social, economic, and cultural context, the directors and films will be provided as will resources on further viewing and reading afterwards.
