Course overview

In this entertaining course, you will learn about the satire and politics behind a number of entertaining and interesting musicals from the 1930s to the modern day.

Course description

You will learn about:

  • musicals based on international politics, including Evita and Chess;

  • the plethora of 'horror' musicals including classics such as Rocky Horror Show, Little Shop of Horrors and others;

  • Rodgers and Hammerstein's stranger efforts, including Carousel and the almost-forgotten Allegro;

  • musicals that had unusual roots, including Hello Dolly! and Paint Your Wagon;

Finally, we will look at the satire on the musicals industry itself, The Producers.
