In this course you will learn about the history, life and times behind a number of musicals.
Course description
Elements you will learn about include:
• Fiddler on the Roof and Jewish traditions from Eastern Europe
• Gypsy and the death of Vaudeville
• Singin' in the Rain's" satirical look at the end of the silent era;
• How Guys and Dolls and Chicago reflect the criminality of the Prohibition era;
• Miss Saigon and the fallout from American involvement in Vietnam, and how the musical compares with the opera on which it was based, Madam Butterfly;
• Cole Porter, his life and his musicals.
