Course description
Explore the rich and diverse artistic heritage of Australia in this engaging five-week course. We will journey through both Indigenous and European traditions, examining their unique influences, styles, and cultural significance.
• Week 1: Indigenous Foundations – Discover the ancient traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, including rock paintings, bark paintings, and masks.
• Week 2: Aboriginal Art: Central and Western Desert Art – Delve into the vibrant world of dot painting, exploring its origins, techniques, cultural meanings, and significance within contemporary Indigenous art.
• Week 3: Colonial & Early European Influence – Examine how European settlers introduced new artistic styles.
• Week 4: Australian Impressionism & Landscape Art – Study iconic movements like the Heidelberg School and how artists captured the vast, unique landscapes of Australia.
• Week 5: Contemporary Voices – Explore how Australian artists responded to global movements, shaping a distinct national identity, and investigate the resurgence of Indigenous art on the contemporary scene.
Through discussions, visual analysis, and case studies, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of Australia's artistic evolution and its continuing dialogue between tradition and innovation. No prior knowledge required.
