Course overview

Learners will explore the powerful works of a range of American artists including Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, George Bellows and Alice Neel. In this art history course, we will also take a look at two major art movements of America – Precisionism and Regionalism – including the famous ‘pitchfork’ painting, ‘American Gothic’ (1930) by Grant Wood. All of these paintings and movements will be discussed in their key social, political and cultural context.

Course description

New perspectives, exciting innovations – The course will explore the works of a range of American artists including Thomas Eakins, (realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator)), Winslow Homer (landscape painter and illustrator), Childe Hassam (impressionist painter noted for his urban and coastal scenes), George Bellows (realist painter, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City) and Alice Neel (visual artist, known for her portraits depicting friends, family, lovers, poets, artists and strangers).

The course will also explore Precisionism and Regionalism – two major art movements of America - and the work by Grant Wood the “pitchfork” painting ‘American Gothic’ (1930). No previous knowledge is required, just an interest in art history.
