History: The Egypt of Empire and Conquest - Ancient Egypt and Nubia

In a Study Day suitable for all we will consider how ancient Egypt treated a neighbour. Nubia is the area immediately to the south of ancient Egypt encompassing the south of Egypt today and much of modern Sudan. Nubia itself developed significant cultural entities especially the Kerma civilization and the later Napatan and Meroitic cultures. However much of the history of Nubia is inter-twined with ancient Egypt. The relationship between ancient Egypt and Nubia is a fascinating one and an ever-changing story. This day school explores the Nubian experience with Egypt from trade, through conquest, to the ‘Black Pharaohs’ of the Kushite period.

An Introduction to Twentieth Century History: International Relations in the 1930s and World War 2

By the 1930s there were three competing ideologies: Liberal Democracy, Soviet Communism and Fascism.. the latter in various national forms. Broadly the first two accepted the status quo and the latter in Japan, Germany and Italy were determined on revision. This set the scene for the ensuing conflicts in the Pacific and Europe. The course will examine how and why the world went to war during the 1930s. We will look at the role of individuals and consider how much difference it made that it was Hitler or Mussolini in charge rather than someone else. We will examine how it took time for the USA to emerge from isolation and how that tipped the balance when she did.

History: 20th Century Conflicts

The Twentieth Century was a time of violent struggle between and within nations. Battles were fought, decisions were taken and outcomes arrived at which left legacies for later generations to address. Some of those conflicts remain unresolved today. We will examine four such legacies: the three-way struggle between China, Japan and Russia in the Far East; the origins of the Palestinian Issue; the Breakup of Yugoslavia; and the background to the current conflict in Ukraine. The emphasis will be on the strategy, politics and economics of each conflict. This is not primarily a course of military history though we will touch on the fighting where it helps to understand the issues. We will spend two sessions on each of the four topics. No prior knowledge is required. A reading list will be available and copies of the slides and speakers notes will be made available after completion of each topic.
