Wessex has an intricate history concerned with natural resource development of minerals, transport, agriculture, towns, and manufacture. Its character has been forged by the impact on the landscape of openness to neighbouring areas of Britain, and to the World at large. The region contrasts with other regions in terms of both the nature and pace of development.
Course description
‘The Economic History of Wessex since 1500’ builds upon the day-school ‘The Rural Wessex of Landscape since 1500’, although attendance at both is not required. Regional economic history will be treated systematically, concentrating upon impacts on the landscape that are evident today. There will be copious slides illustrating the diversity of the region and suggestions as to where exploration will be most fruitful.
