Course overview
Course description
The history of Ukraine from 1800 to the present is marked by imperial domination, wars, independence struggles, & its evolving national identity. It has been shaped by Russian & Soviet rule, two world wars, & post-Soviet transformations.
The course will start with a brief summary of the Ukraine pre-1800 and then consider its time as part of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires up until 1917.
The period of revolutions 1917-1921 will be followed by an examination of Soviet rule 1922-1941. The horror of World War Two will be followed by discussion of the later period in the Soviet Union 1945-1991.
We will then look at independent Ukraine between 1992-2014 before we analyse the annexation of the Crimea and the war in the Donbas before finishing with a discussion of the 2022 invasion and what the future might hold for the independent state.
Throughout we will use historical analysis and source material to aid our discussions. We will consider political, economic, social and cultural issues in all sessions.
Ukraine's history reflects its struggle for sovereignty, identity, and resilience against powerful empires. From the Russian Empire to Soviet rule, and now in its fight against Russia, Ukraine remains at the crossroads of East and West.
