Course overview

To examine the ways in which the Grand Duchy of Moscow expanded into Central Europe and sought to absorb the territories of the original 'Russ'. The course will look at the various 'expansionist' Russian rulers from the time of Peter the Great onwards, and the ways in which each of them tried to establish a dominance over their European neighbours. It will examine not only the patterns of physical expansion but at various attempts to rule through 'satellite' regimes. It will consider the apparent consistency of Russian ambitions over the past thousand years, and the light these may shed on Russian actions both now and in the future.

Course description

Although the original ‘Russian’ state was based upon Kiev and the Ukraine, by the middle of the sixteenth century the Grand Duchy of Moscow was the only Russian Slav territory that had not been taken over by various waves of invasion. A succession of rulers from Peter the Great onwards pushed the frontiers of their state towards the West in attempts to maintain a position of authority in Central Europe.
