Course overview

In an age when family history has become popular, we look at one of the longest-lived and most influential families in European history. This family - which developed from being minor nobility in the early Holy Roman Empire to the holders of the title of Emperor - is still recognisable after over 1,000 years of existence. At one stage it controlled vast territories in Europe, America, and the Far East and even in its last stages of territorial control it was only removed as a result of external rather than internal forces.

Course description

The course content will include:

1)· the growth of a small noble family into the ownership of wide territories as much the result of judicious marriages as of selective conquests: 'Other families wage war: you, O happy Austria, marry'

2)· the structure of states in the early modern period which make the personal relationships of rulers a matter of state policy

3)· the way in which loyalty to a particular family can keep together very diverse territories and peoples.
