Course overview

A talk featuring the recent history of the town centre before the coming of the large shopping centres and pedestrianisation. This will bring to life tales about the shops in the High Street, some of which are still there and some that are sadly no more.

Course description

During this talk, we will journey on a virtual trip back into the past to a time when the High Street was a main thoroughfare. At that time the street was a mixture of both shops and houses with some of the owners living above their businesses. Mostly then, a shop was part of the house rather than an apartment over a retail establishment.

The most common way to travel around the town then was by horse or bicycle.

Throughout this talk there will be the constant themes throughout this talk are; Water and Flooding, Roads and Traffic, Alcohol and Abstinence, Housing retail and Hospitality.
