Course overview

This 5-session course is designed for adult learners who are not literate in their native language and need basic English for daily life. Using a visual, phonics-based, and interactive approach, learners will develop speaking, listening, and foundational literacy skills. Topics include greetings, personal information, numbers, shopping, health, emergencies, and directions. Through role-play, real-life scenarios, and hands-on activities, learners will build confidence in basic communication and essential life skills. The course focuses on practical, everyday English to help participants navigate their communities, access services, and improve independence in an engaging and supportive environment.

Course description

This 5-session, 12.5-hour course is designed for adult learners who are not literate in their native language and need foundational English skills for daily life. Using an interactive, phonics-based, and visual learning approach, the course helps learners develop confidence in speaking, listening, and basic literacy while focusing on real-life communication needs.

Throughout the course, learners will practice everyday conversations, recognize common words and signs, and develop essential skills to navigate their communities. Sessions cover basic greetings, personal information, numbers, shopping, money handling, health communication, emergencies, directions, and transportation. Activities include role-playing, real-world simulations, visual aids, and hands-on exercises, ensuring practical and engaging learning experiences.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to introduce themselves, complete simple forms, count and handle money, ask for help, recognize key signs, and follow basic directions. The supportive learning environment encourages participation, builds confidence, and promotes independence.

This course is ideal for learners who need a strong foundation in English for everyday tasks such as shopping, visiting a doctor, or using public transport. No prior literacy skills are required, and learning is tailored to support each individual’s progress in a friendly, inclusive setting.
