Course overview
Course description
We will start with thinking about what fabric we can recycle and use up all the little scraps of fabric you may have from previous projects. Using recycled materials not only helps in reducing waste but also sparks creativity by encouraging you to think outside the box.
We will then move onto making small sewing projects with sustainability in mind, these will include a mending kit to keep threads and needles in, a zip purse, a patchwork cushion and a choice of bags. Skills covered will include; seams and hems, buttonholes, inserting zips, sewing and reinforcing corners, sewing curves and darts. Each project is designed to build your confidence and proficiency with the sewing machine, while also promoting an eco-friendly approach to crafting.
We will discuss how designers and artists consider sustainability and look at where resources can be bought sustainably and ethically. This will include tips on sourcing second-hand materials and supporting local businesses that prioritise environmental responsibility. The course aims to not only develop your sewing skills but also instil a mindset of sustainability and ethical consumption.
