This hands-on course introduces SEND to stop-frame animation, guiding them through character creation, storytelling, filming, and editing. Participants will brainstorm and craft characters, develop simple storylines, and learn to animate using stop-motion apps on their own devices. It concludes with a showcase where learners present their animations, receive peer feedback, and celebrate their creative achievements. Course description

This course is designed to introduce SEND students to the fundamentals of stop-frame animation. Participants will learn to create their own characters, develop simple storylines, and produce a short stop-frame animation using their own devices. The sessions will be hands-on, supportive, and adapted to individual learning needs.

Week 1: Introduction to Stop-Frame Animation

What is stop-frame animation?

Examples of simple stop-frame animations

Understanding basic animation principles (frames, movement, and persistence of vision)

Overview of equipment and software (smartphones, tablets, free animation apps)

Week 2: Character Design and Creation

Brainstorming character ideas

Choosing materials: clay, paper, toys, or household objects

Hands-on activity: Creating characters using chosen materials

Basic movement tests with characters

Week 3: Creating a Simple Storyline

Introduction to storytelling basics (beginning, middle, and end)

Developing a short script or storyboard

Planning character movements and scene transitions

Week 4: Setting Up for Animation

Creating a basic background and scene setup

Understanding lighting and camera positioning

Introduction to stop-frame animation apps (e.g., Stop Motion Studio)

Practice session: Taking test shots

Week 5: Filming the Animation

Step-by-step guide to capturing frames

Using onion skinning to maintain consistency

Adding small movements for smooth animation

Troubleshooting common mistakes

Week 6: Editing and Adding Sound

Reviewing captured frames

Editing techniques: trimming, adjusting speed, and adding transitions

Introduction to adding sound effects, music, or narration

Week 7: Finalizing and Sharing the Animation

Final touches: adding titles, credits, and exporting video

Sharing animations with the class

Peer feedback and encouragement

Week 8 (Optional): Showcase and Celebration

Watching all completed animations

Discussion on what was learned and enjoyed

Certificates of completion

Course Requirements:

A smartphone or tablet with a free stop-motion animation app installed

Basic art and craft materials (provided by the course or brought by participants)

A willingness to learn and have fun!

This course encourages creativity, patience, and self-expression while building technical skills in animation. It is structured to be engaging and accessible for adults with special needs, ensuring a supportive and enjoyable learning environment.
