Course overview

This course aims to introduce students to the art of portraiture in a relaxed and supportive environment. You will learn how to draw the face, neck and features correctly and then move on to painting. The class is ideal for beginners who would like to learn new skills or improve old ones. Using a simplified, structured, and step-by-step approach, students will learn the skills and techniques necessary to be able to paint portraits. Creating portraits that have a convincing sense of shape, form and colour is difficult to do, and this course looks at various techniques used to do this. By learning to interpret the human head into its abstract elements (shape, tone & colour), you will gain confidence in how to paint portraits in a structured and methodical manner.

Course description

Based on painting in acrylics, this course introduces the basic techniques used in portraiture. Working from enlarged photographs, students first learn to accurately draw the head, neck and face with correct proportions and foreshortening. It then looks at using light, shade to suggest roundness and to help create a likeness. The course then moves on to colour mixing and acrylic painting techniques.

Following logical steps and illustrated with clear demonstrations and handouts, it finishes with a personal painting project. You’ll learn about the materials, techniques, brushes and canvas to help you start. It’s a comprehensive step-by-step guide to portrait painting for beginners with oil, from sketching to adding the final touches. Learn how to create vibrant artwork, using expert colour and value mixing techniques to illustrate expressions. Paint the likeness of your subject by experimenting with light and shade.
